Walking down Davie Street, one could easily pass by the unassuming building that houses a Vancouver gem; The Opus Hotel. Unlike most four star hotels one encounters, this one has touches of whimsy throughout the rooms. Not only are the rooms well appointed with forty inch flat screen TVs, mid-century modern inspired furnishings, but some of their art is literally pulled from the 8-bit majesty that was Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! Nintendo game. How fantastic is that?
We were put up in a lavish Deluxe King Room suite that overlooked the street, putting us at the pulse of urban living, yet we had the tranquillity of a white tiled bathroom with a soaker tub and piled high with fluffy and perfectly welcoming towels. The Deluxe King Room was a generous 350 square feet, larger than most newly built condos in the city! The Opus Hotel splurged on bedding, with indulgently plush down filled duvets and pillows- no chicken feathers here. With lightning fast free wi-fi and a fully stocked private bar, we were spoiled. I find one of the markers of a higher end hotel is in the power of its hairdryer. If it feels like a child’s warm breath, do they really care about the little details that make a stay memorable? Thankfully, the Opus Hotel had a dryer to take your hair from sopping to tinder dry in a New York minute.
Like any Four Star worth its salt, the service was welcoming, efficient and friendly. In fact, they even have a “Lifestyle Concierge”, a person about town that will tailor their best recommendations to you, rather than a boilerplate answer for unknowing guests. However, if the concierge were to offer their top pics on a nearby lounge, the one to the right of the lobby can’t be beat. The Opus Bar is a immersive space, one that envelopes you into a world of cool. Even if you saunter in wearing last year’s ballet flats with a pair of unfortunate jeggings, when you are in this Bar, you feel instantly hip. Bon mots in neon stand out amongst the impossibly gorgeous staff and lush blue velvet seats. The drinks are inspired as well and offer choices for those of us who don’t dig hooch.
Whether you are having a personal recharge weekend, a sanctuary to power through some work or a sexy place to seal the deal with a new love, the Opus Hotel has your back.
