With a gorgeous sunset radiating in the background, pink mojitos were flowing alongside plump, glistening Fanny Bay oysters, the vision of at-risk individuals in the developing world was the farthest thing from everyone’s mind. Except for Dr. Harbir Sian, founder of the brand with a heart, Kingsley Eyewear. Sian created Kingsley, to not only produce affordable premium eyewear but to reflect what is in his soul; giving back.
Like footwear line, Toms, for each pair of glasses purchased, Kingsley will in turn give a full eye exam and prescription glasses to someone in need. Unlike Toms, the product is visually appealing and oozes quality with precision lenses and coatings essential to modern eye health. The glasses have a nice weight to them with spring hinges, while the tumbled Italian acetate that form the bulk of the frames steal the show by coming in a variety of colors and patterns that shimmer in the light. Sian eyes brands like Warby Parker as inspiration for the future as he envisions opening brick and mortar Kingsley boutiques as well as continuing to sell online.
Sian, a self-professed “nerd”, looked anything but in his nipped-in oxblood Ted Baker suit topped off with suave AF velvet smoking loafers. Sorry Dr. Harbir, real nerds wear pleated front khakis and oxford shirts with billowing sleeves.
A varied collection of movers and shakers came to the launch including Danielle Wiebe from Vancity Business Babe with her bubbly assistant Sydnee Ricci. Jen Tam of the blog Her Waise Choice showed up wearing the most classically chic ensemble of a linen blouse, relaxed tie waisted black cropped pants with leg lengthening nude leather block heeled mules. Looking at men’s shoe choices, the pair du jour of the evening went to Rohan Sheth of Rohan Sheth Consulting who wore a fabulous pair of black-on-black spotted oxfords that he snapped up on his last trip to Las Vegas.
The evening, set atop the new building Five Ten Seymour, was relaxed but welcoming as the event was the hosted by Vancouver’s favorite social media superstar, Erin Sousa of Sparkle Media. Aly Armstrong of Aly Armstrong Event Planning and Design presented the launch as Truffles Fine Foods provided the tasty Mediterranean-inspired morsels. The evening was a laid-back success celebrating a kind doctor on his quest for selling glasses with style and soul.
