It’s that time of year again! Holiday work functions, Family get-togethers, festive events, New Years Eve parties and smoldering moments under the mistletoe. It’s hard enough to get your sartorial act together: (do I work jumpsuits or a flirty dress for that special night out? Ack!) But what is just as important as your fashion statement is what you put on your face, makeup!
Whether you know your way around a limited edition palette or fully admit ignorance in the ways of the winged liner, we have scoured YouTube for some choice tutorials that step by step will have you looking fab and ready to smooch up a storm with your office crush (after a few G&T’s, when the head of HR is busy flagging a cab, obvs.)
British beauty vlogger Lisa Eldridge is our go-to for easy to do and easy on the eyes makeup looks. They are classic and so so so chic. Even though she is the creative director at Lancome, she keeps both worlds separate for the most part and uses a variety of readily available products at various price points. I followed her instructions for her “Classic Smoky Eye” for the annual office obligation and viola, I stood out for all the right reasons. (No TP trailing on the back of the shoe.)
Egyptian-Canadian beauty vlogger Eman Raouf is a force to be reckoned with. With 50 million views and collaborations with major industry players like Gucci, Raouf is now based in L.A. and living it up in the sun. Her tutorials range from cutesy girl-next-door to stone cold fox and everything in between. To kick it old school, I really loved the “90’s Supermodel Glam Makeup Tutorial.” Look like Cindy, Claudia and Christy without the unfortunate boyfriend choices (David Copperfield, Claudia, really?!?)
Nyma Tang is making waves in all the right ways. Last month she called bullshit on KKW Beauty’s so-called shade inclusivity for being too light for dark skin tones. She praised Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty for catering to all, with products that literally work from ivory to ebony skin. Tang does like the change that is happening in the industry, but it is slow. Pioneers like Tang make fabulous looks accessible to all and highlights products that are affordable to prestige as well. Her “Easy Day to Night Tutorial” is a must watch.
Desi makeup artist Puneet Kaur might not be old enough to drink, but she sure has drive. Not only does she have successful YouTube channel, she is also a straight-A college student with her eyes set on Medical School. Based in Northern California, this self-professed nerd might be math and science inclined, but can sure smoke out an eye. Her “Midnight Blue Glitter Eyes” video is essential viewing for those who want to make their eyes really pop for the holidays.
What’s on every makeup girl’s wish list? Why Urban Decay’s Naked Heat of course!
Jen Chae of “From Head to Toe” fame has a red-hot look using the newest edition to the cult favorite Naked family. From humble beginnings in Kansas to over 1.2 million subscribers, Chae is kicking ass and taking names in the world of vlogging. Chae’s Naked Heat look incorporates brick reds for around the eyes and a candy apple red glossy lip. It’s not a look for visiting Granny at the old folk’s home, but you can’t beat it for a night out.
Navajo Nation beauty vlogger Luxie Lane has been making great content for just over 6 years. The busy mother makes time for a burgeoning jewelry business and getting gussied up for her subscribers on the regular. As many beauty nerds know, purple makeup makes brown eyes pop, and Luxie Lane made a fantastic lil’ video on just that called “GRWM: Lavender Makeup”.
YouTube is a melting pot of beauty videos, from the most polished with high end production values to a shaky cellphone camera in Granny’s basement. What counts with beauty videos is if the end result is attainable to you. While original scores written purely for that tutorial are a fun extra, if you end up crying with a q-tip sticking out of your eye, it’s an epic fail. I hope you enjoyed our cheat sheet of our pics of the best of the best. Post your finished looks on Instagram with the hashtag #VCVLOOKS and you could win a prize! Happy Holidays!
